Description

Discipleship is a subject that often comes to the surface in my conversation with Pastors and ministry leaders today. The focus on the topic has increased even in the last five years, suggesting a perceived need to better understand how effective discipleship happens. When I ask leaders, “What does the word Discipleship mean to you?” the answers are almost as varied as the people I talk to. The more usual responses include one of the following:

  • Leading someone to Jesus and getting them to attend the Sunday Service, hang around Christians and listen to sermons
  • Leading someone to Jesus and getting them involved in a small group
  • Getting a person to work through a 6-week course on the basics of the faith
  • If you are a Christian, you are a disciple of Jesus
  • Walking with a person like Jesus walked with His disciples

The follow-up question I use with leaders, “How is this approach working for you?” often surprises them and they usually don’t know, having been focused on the many other activities that claim their attention in the daily run of ministry. At the same time, the majority are puzzled by the lack of seeming engagement and connectedness with God on the part of many of their people.
